On February 27, 2025, the CIPRA Annual Conference in Salzburg focused on the growing land-use conflicts driven by the energy transition in the Alps. The EUSALP Co-Presidency of Austria and Liechtenstein opened the event, emphasizing the importance of this crucial topic.
Space in the Alps is limited and being used more and more intensively, including for electricity generation. Energy transition and renaturation are often in conflict with each other. How can Alpine spatial planning mediate between the different demands? How can it manage the pressure of use on mountain regions? How can the latest EU renewable energy directive and similar initiatives in Switzerland and Liechtenstein be implemented in a way that doesn’t harm nature, landscape and biodiversity in the Alps?

Experts from various disciplines presented examples of how alpine spatial planning can help manage increasing land-use pressure. About 160 participants exchanged and discussed on this issue, demonstrating the high relevance of this topic.
Thank you to everyone who took part in shaping the future of the Alps! ➡️ More info: www.cipra.org/jft2025
