MOSAIC

The Interreg Alpine Space Project MOSAIC, "Managing prOtective foreSt fAcIng climate Change compound events", aims to enhance the resilience of Alpine forests against climate-related hazards by promoting sustainable forest management practices. The project, which started in 2022 and will finish in October 2025, involves 12 partners from 6 countries.

A central objective of MOSAIC is to collect, harmonize, and share data on climate-related disasters and trends in the Alpine region. This is pursued through three key work packages focused on data collection and projections of climate change effects on Alpine forests (webGIS atlas); the development of a hazard modelling platform to analyse climate-related risks; and the establishment of forest labs to raise awareness and promote adaptive forest management.
Raising awareness among stakeholders – including foresters, risk managers, and the public – about the importance of adaptive forest management is therefore another key goal of the MOSAIC project. In this context, forest living labs are designed to support the creation of an Alpine-wide network that fosters the exchange of knowledge and promotes the implementation of best practices for enhancing forest resilience.

By fostering transnational cooperation and engaging local actors, the project contributes to safeguarding the protective function of forests and enhancing the long-term sustainability of Alpine ecosystems in the face of climate change.
